Libya’s Modern Day Robinhood

The Revolution continues ... Once upon a time, in a land far far away lived a “Hero” called Robinhood, our “Hero” took from the rich to give the poor. As the legend goes, his acts were nothing but selfless, kind and noble, however, as with any story; there are two sides of this tale.

By definition;

Stealing, is the act of “Taking (another person’s property) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it”

I believe as Muslims, we can accept the above definition and add that the act itself is Haram (i.e. Islamically Forbidden).

Now back to our Hero ... The legend has it that the “Tales of Robinhood” were set in the mythical forests of “Sherwood” in a time where the people of Nottingham were left hungry, oppressed and over taxed by their brutal king. Times were truly hard for the people of Nottingham, yet till today opinions are divided as to whether Robin was really the mythical Hero? Or just a notorious thief? On one hand, it would depend where you stood at the time but to the other side it is clear cut as “the act committed is stealing, rich or poor, it’s stealing”.

I ask myself and I wonder, then I ask myself again and it hits me like a tonne of bricks, no matter what good Robinhood did with his stolen riches he was, by definition, a thief as the fundamentals of the matter all point to the same direction. To recap, our hero (or Thief) took from the rich (in other terms the King/Government) and handed his takings over to the poor (or the needy people) ... Now, keeping this thought in mind we fast forward to our present day.

Today in FREE Libya we have many Robinhoods, those who stole from the people (in other terms from the Libyan Government) and somehow they now seem to be considered as Heroes. As with Robinhood, no matter what good their stolen money achieved for the revolution, it is still tainted money, it is still stolen money; it is still the people’s money.

From the many Robinhoods, I want to shed light on one particular Robinhood. Once upon a time, he was the gatekeeper of Gaddafi’s riches, he, was considered Gaddafi’s Warren Buffet, he, embezzled and robbed Libya’s coffers, he, overlooked the modernization of the so called “Libya Tomorrow”, his lavish lifestyle was the talk of the poor in Libya, he, is one of Libya’s Robinhoods yet Sherwood’s Robin, by definition, was a Thief and so is this Robinhood.

During the Feb 17 revolution, this Robinhood appeared to supported his people, he seemed to take the peoples side, however, by the end of the revolution, this Robinhood used Libya's stollen riches to established his own “independent” TV station, a TV station to polish his image and divert attention from Libyans stolen money, however, Libyans will never forget that this Robinhood is no better than a common Thief, this Robinhood must be trailed and prosecuted.

This Robinhood is no other than ......................

At The Algerian Tree Libya Stands

The Revolution continues ... Today Libya stands on the shoulders of Giants, the Martyrs, and from today forward Libyans must strive to fulfil their martyr’s ambitions of a FREE Libya

The values that Libya’s revolution stood on are simple, untarnished and pure yet some are trying to manipulate the revolution for their own personal agendas. The core values that Libyans hold high are being violated by corrupt individuals, individuals that once upon a time stood side by side with the fallen dictator, yet today we see them as hardcore Feb 17 revolutionaries, or is this a case of “The King is Dead, Long Lives The King?” ... Can these people be trusted? Can they really change? Or could they simply have readapted to the new ecosystem?

For the past couple of weeks Libya has witnessed what Libyans have never witnessed before, Libya and Libyans are witnessing the new dawn of democracy and that of Freedom of Speech. For the first time, Libyans have taken to streets to exercise their democratic right to convey their message to the world and to Libya’s new rulers. Their message is simple, their message is direct, and their message pure, their message is to rectify the path of the revolution back to its original course. Young Libyans have taken to Algeria Square in Tripoli and Shjaraa Square Benghazi to protest what they see as the hijacking of their revolution by certain figures of the past regime.

The protestors have raised their banners to demand that the revolution’s custodians, the politicians, safeguard the essence of Libya’s revolution. The protestors demand that their revolution is not infiltrated by the corrupt individuals of the previous regime and last but not least, the message to Libya’s new rulers urging them maintain the righteous path of this revolution.

Finally, the protestors will standing their ground and let the world bare witness that Libya will never descend into the darkness again, the protestors are here to remind the new Libyan rulers that the Libyan people will no longer tolerate the mismanagement of their country or its assets and more importantly they stand their grounds to let the widows, orphans and loved ones of the martyrs know that no drop of Libyan blood will ever go in vain.

God Bless the brave Men and Women who stand strong in every square in Libya demanding the “Rectification of the Path of their Revolution”.

The Unemployed Employed of Libya

The revolution continues, Libya might have closed the first chapter but many more are to come, the coming chapters need the same determination and dedication as they are every bit as important as the previous chapter.

This chapter needs Libyans to lay down their guns and replace them with clear open minds; this chapter has a direct effect on each household and every family.

This chapter is about work and employment, it’s the livelihood of our families and generations to come, and it’s the foundation of any self sufficient functional country.

It is no secret that one of Libya’s most daunting tasks is to tackle the unemployment and to come to terms with the mess left behind by the previous regime. The current workforce in Libya is, by no fault of their own, young, naive, uneducated, untrained and lacks the basic work ethics and these are the sad facts that unfortunately any government must take into account when tackling this issue. The first step of rehabilitation is for Libyans to search deep within themselves and eradicate the ideology that was forced upon them for 40 years. The only comfort is that, I believe, the situation cannot get any worse so the natural progression will take Libya forward.

In order to move forward Libya must not look back, Libya needs to collectively sit down and strategise for the future. Ghaddafi’s Libya was short sighted, disorganized and erratic but Libya now is a new Libya, where the “democratically elected” government will need to be striving for long term success with strategies and ways to develop Libya’s young nation, the government needs to meet the expectation on the streets and must satisfy the electorates.

Ghaddafi’s Libya had many flaws, but one in particular stood out, and that was the marginalization of Libya’s private sector and throttling its growth to the extent of criminalizing success and persecuting Libya’s entrepreneurs and business leaders, however, long gone the days when Libya’s private sector was seen upon as a pariah as in Libya’s new dawn, Libyans need to embrace this sector and encourage its growth. The government has an obligation to pass legislation to protect our private sector and encourage expansion and growth; however, the government should also protect the rights of the employees and strike a balance between the private sector and their employees.

International companies that operated in Libya were also bounded and shackled with all sorts of bureaucracy and baseless laws, laws that would halt the enhancement of the Libyan workforce, laws that would cap the salaries Libyans would take, laws that favoured the few over the good of Libya, however, the International companies can play a pivotal role in new Libya, these companies must become leading examples in transparency, fairness and in developing their Libyan employees. International oil majors in particular have a moral responsibility to invest in local Libyans; however, governmental legislation is required to safeguard this process without interfering.

Over the years Ghaddafi planted many seeds, all of destructive nature, and unfortunately with detrimental effects. The results are apparent, to the extent that over the years Libyans have become accustom to the ideology that the government MUST employ everyone or in other terms, the government has an obligation to employ all graduates, however, in a free market this far from the truth, as no government is obliged to employ everyone neither should it. Libyans must come to terms that the old system was dysfunctional and unsustainable. Libyans must come to terms with the reality of what are the responsibilities of their elected government. Libya should not strive to become a welfare nation as Libya can potentially become a productive nation.

What can the government do? The government can do so much indirectly (some cases directly), as one of the sole responsibilities of any government is to stimulate markets and stabilize the country for businesses to flourish.

Again, what can the government do? The government should assist and encourage the private sector in Libya to recruit Libyans by creating incentive schemes to those companies that can take on more Libyans; the government can also place tax relief’s schemes per employee which would stimulate growth and prosperity. The government should sponsor workshops (in Libya by international organizations) to enhance the skills and work ethics of Libyans and to rehabilitate the workforce. The government needs to encourage all industries to establish trade unions and professional institutes to ensure that standards are met. The government has a big role to play in employment within the public sectors, but not by employing a third of the nation, which unfortunately it does at the moment. The government must fairly legislate and clearly illustrate to all that all employers and employees have rights and responsibilities towards each other.

Finally, the most important factor “remuneration”, while the workforce must accept that in a free market their remuneration will be based accordingly to their input and nothing else, however, the government must pay very close attention the remuneration packages. Although the government should not employ all but it is directly responsible to set a “minimum wage” that all sectors within Libya must adhere to, this minimum wage needs to be calculated based on a techno‐economical evaluation of the current Libyan market and the basic needs of Libyan families. The minimum wage should be revised and evaluated on a yearly basis and this will ensure that all Libyans can afford a certain lifestyle.

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

Libya is on the right path, its moving in the right direction and we have the potential to create, not just a great country but an extraordinary one. Keeping all this in mind, it’s just an untapped potential which needs to be backed up by the strong will of our people and total dedication of our Leaders.

“With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility”, that’s the message our new prospective and inexperienced leaders need to embrace. They must understand that their sole responsibility is to serve the Libyan people only; our leaders and politicians must adapt to the new found freedom of Libya, the freedom that allows our people to criticize their government and the way their country is being run. Our politicians must learn to accept criticism and so do our people, people need to accept that not all criticism is destructive but usually it’s constructive and it’ll keep our new elected government in line and in tune with the average Libyan.

The concept of freedom is new to Libya; it’s still raw and still being moulded but, is Freedom a privilege or a right to have? Is Freedom absolute or limited? When does it become limited and why?

“With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility”, as individuals we should take a minute and immerse ourselves within the essence of this quote. Freedom empowers us, it completes us and makes us whole but it’s also delicate and fragile and can be misunderstood. Does freedom permit infringing others rights? The analogy of freedom and rights are complementary, as ones freedom should never cross others basic rights and vice versa. Freedom gives us the right to criticize our politicians and leaders, but it does not give us the right to be vindictive and embark in smear campaigns. The power of Freedom is a responsibility on every Libyan; it’s our responsibility and duty to honour those to have forsaken their lives for Libya.

Finally, the responsibility lies on us to safeguard our nations Freedom, the responsibility is on us to lay the foundations of a potentially great Libya, the responsibility is on us to be responsible with Libya

Condescending they are ... Or Are They?

Have you ever felt that most Libyan expats are a bit condescending towards the local Libyans? Have you ever felt that most Libyans who have lived in the west believe that they “Know it all”? Have you ever noticed how most of our expats refer to Libyans as “The Libyans” in their conversations, as if they are on a higher pedestal?... Or is this all just a misunderstanding?

During the years of oppression Libyans suffered many injustices and hardships; none more highlighted than the human rights violations. Libyans who lived in Libya suffered from the unjust laws that restricted Libyans income and forced them into poverty. A rich country with poor inhabitants was Libya, and that it was. The so called “State of the Masses” only served a few yet the masses were left with inadequate health system, an insufficient education system and a crumbling shell of a country. For 42 years ... Libyans around the world suffered from this repressing regime, but none suffered more than those who resided within Libya and had no means to escape the reality of Gaddafi’s “State of the Masses”.

Days and Years went by and Libya would suffer more and more until that day arrived, that day was to be the 17th of February 2011. That day our Brothers and Sister finally stood up, they stood up and said “NO” to the vicious regime. Batons, bullets and missiles were the regimes only response, yet our brothers/sisters fought and sacrificed all for Libya; they fought and died for our country, our home.

The motto that floats around is that “No Libyan Wishes to Live Aboard” or so we have been told, yet Libya has one of highest expat populations [Relative to Libya’s own population] in the world? Your average Joe (Or Meelad) would ask “What have these Expats done for Libya?”... The other question that eludes our thoughts is “Where were all these Expats during the years of oppression?”... But what we should ask ourselves is “What made our Expats flee Libya?” the answer to this particular question holds the key too many unanswered questions.

The motto that floats around is that “No Libyan Wishes to Live Aboard” and I personally believe in this motto and believe that the majority can relate to this slogan. Why did our forefathers migrate from Libya? Or were they forced out of Libya? The second paragraph of this article provides a glimpse to the rationale behind why they left Libya yet the reasons are much deeper and complex. It is true that Libya, relatively, has a rather large number of expats, it is also worth mentioning that the larger chunk of these expats are well educated professionals and highly successful in their respected fields. Most Libyan expats fled Libya due to the same circumstances that ignited our 17th February revolution; most expats fled Libya for the exact values that were held high during our 17th February revolution.

Feeling helpless towards your loved ones is unbearable, seeing your home country the way it was yet helpless to do anything was torture. Then 17th February revolution arrived, no one supported Libya’s revolution causes like its own expats and it’s a fact that Libyans Expat played a pivotal role in keeping the revolution alive, starting with keeping the Libyan cause alive in the media, fund raising for the injured, lobbying their adopted home governments and some returned to Libya to fight side by side with their brothers/sisters. Our Expats have done more for Libya than meets the naked eye, but this does not justify the condescending quotes we often hear on various news channels (and on various Facebook groups). On the other hand, there is no justification for our brothers/sisters within Libya to strongly object/reject prospective politician’s simply on the basis that they have been residing away from Libya for many years, as our expats are Libyans and have a stake in Libya like any other.

Finally, I would say to my Libyan Brothers/Sisters who consider themselves as expats to be more courteous to their Brothers/Sisters within Libya. I ask of them to be more respectful to the way Libya’s democracy is being established, as the democracies we see in the west were built over hundreds of years and it took time to mature, so shall our democracy. I ask of my Brothers/Sisters within Libya to diversify and embrace the lessons learnt from our expats as they will only benefit Libya and make Libya stronger.

In Libya we say, “Blood Will Never Turn into Water”, this particular quote has a deep and hidden meaning ... Long lives FREE Libya.

Where Our Responsibilities towards Libya Start?

Dear Brothers/Sisters

First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Libya for its Freedom and to congratulate all Libyans around the world for reclaiming and long lost jewel that is Libya.

Libya ... Libya means something to all of us, it has a special place among each and every one of us, it is only Libya that we can truly call home, it is Libya that has brought us together and it is for Libya we gave the ultimate sacrifice and it is only for Libya that we would give much more ... I have a firm belief that Libyans all around the world want nothing but to see Libya in its rightful place, however, Libya is only what we Libyans make it to be, although I am confident that we will stand tall and strong to position Libya at its rightful place but for this to be achieved we as Libyans must take our responsibility towards Libya.

I believe that each one of us has a role to play, as Libya today is fragmented, shattered, exhausted, wounded, stressed and depleted from the previous brutal regime of Gaddafi; however, that era has come to an end and Libya is FREE.

Our Responsibility towards Libya start by looking deep within ourselves and our souls, as the old regime corrupted Libya in many ways but none more effective than corrupting our souls, ideology and how we perceive ourselves and others around us.

The first step towards change is to change what’s within us and that, to me, is our initial responsibility towards Libya... Each and every one of us must look closely into the mirror of our souls and change what should need change:

• Libya needs us to become the rightful guardians of the Feb 17 Revolution
• Libya needs us to become worthy of the sacrifices made by our Brothers and Sisters who passed away for Libya,
• Libya needs us to build Libya for the future generations

Finally I conclude by this Islamic quote “God does not change a nation until they change what’s within them”

Scholarships ...

My fellow Libyan brother/sisters,

First and foremost, our Feb 17 revolution was not ignited for scholarships or financial gain and I believe is it disrespectful that anyone uses the Feb 17 movement for personal gain

Feb 17 Revolution was a turning point for us Libyans all around the world and no one has the right to claim a stake in our revolution ... shame on those who do

A scholarship is not a god given right to anyone!!! And yet we Libyans (especially those in the UK) see that the government is obliged to provide us with these scholarships, but why? In Pre-FREE LIBYA, Gadaffi used these scholarships to keep us down, he used these scholarships like a golden carrot, he used these scholarships to throw dirt on our eyes, he used these scholarships to keep Libyans chanting for him, he used these scholarships to keep Libyans away from Libya ... BUT GUESS WHAT, Gadaffi is gone and long lives FREE LIBYA!!!

I ask everyone to take a few seconds and think ... Is it more economically viable to invest in our schools and education system in Libya? Or is it more economically viable to send large number of students to do higher education (Masters/Doctorates)? Keeping in mind the 70% of the higher education being taught in the UK could not be applied in Libya (Example: MSc in Nano-Technology of Micro processing units)?

Don’t get me wrong, I am with further education, but not in the sense or way it’s done now, i.e. send send send and send some more ... We need more strategic planning and selecting what our students study or directing them to what the country needs so Libya could reap the benefits of their studies, we need to erase the old ideology, we need a fresh start, we need a pragmatic outlook to the future of higher education, we need MSc/PhD’s that will primarily benefit Libya first and not just benefit the individual, we need to prepare our younger generations and invest in their future and not squander Libya's wealth on the 60 year old who is still doing his/her decorates and has been for the last 10 years.

How many people deserve a scholarship? Because all Libyans know that once upon a time it was who you knew or who you were related to which got you the scholarship? How many Libyans are receiving a full UK scholarship while they reside in Libya (More than you think)? How many Libyans on scholarships should be on scholarships (Less than you think)?

Finally, It hurts me to see how a large section of Libyans have the ideology of “Take whatever you can get from the country” as FREE Libya is bigger and better than to be taken advantage of and so are the FREE Libyans

I agree that the Libyan embassy in the UK should filter and revise all scholarships as many who are on scholarships should not have been given these scholarships from the start but that’s how Gadaffi ruled Libya, a state of chaos

I really hope you will read all the points

Question: There are no electricity bills in Libya; electricity is free for all its citizens.

Categorically untrue. Despite poor electricity infrastructure and poor coverage of electricity lines, even in the Capital, Libyan home owners pay monthly/quarterly (area dependant) electricity bills based on meter readings. Electricity is cut off in instances of unpaid bills. Reconnection upon payment is not instant. The electric infrastructure is weak and some areas of Libya do not have electricity available at all.

Question: There is no interest on loans, banks in Libya are state-owned and loans given to all its citizens at 0% interest by law.
Categorically untrue. Banks all over Libya have been giving out loans for years and years. There is a percentage rate charge on all loans, which is comparable to an interest rate, but in the spirit of ‘islamic ethics’ it is not called interest, it is called an ‘Administrative Expense’ – Masareef Edareeya.

Question: A House is considered a human right in Libya ¬ Gaddafi vowed that his parents would not get a house until everyone in Libya had a home. Gaddafi¹s father has died while he, his wife and his mother are still living in a tent.

Gaddafi abused this human right as much as he did other basic rights. It is well known in Libya that political opponents and successful business men/women had their homes confiscated and handed over to regime members, usually rewards for Free Officers – Dubat A7rar. Many farms and homes and businesses were confiscated during three infamous phases of Libyas dictatorial history: 1969 – The dreaded Green Revolution. Free Officers were rewarded land, homes, and farms that sometimes belonged to other people and the original owners were not compensated or asked if this was ok.
Late 70’s – The introduction of the law Albayt le Sakinehee – The Home Belongs to its Dwellers. As this law was passed overnight, thousands of homeowners instantly lost their homes, as tenants (those renting the homes) claimed ownership on account of being the ‘dwellers’. The law applied to homes, farms, shops, etc.
90’s – The introduction of Purification Committees (Lejnat al Tatheer). This committee ran by the widely know slogan, ‘Min ayna laka hada?’ – “From where did you obtain this?”, a form of ultra-socialism where people’s possessions, including homes and businesses, were confiscated if seen to be ‘surplus to requirement’ or contributing to a ‘monopoly’. Regarding Gaddafis ‘vow’: While Gaddafi waited for ‘everyone in Libya’ to be housed, he himself lived in a sprawling 6km square compound in the centre of the capital which was home to state of the art security and an underground network of rooms and ultramodern bunkers. He also had a vast and well known farm on Airport Road in Tripoli. This, just in the capital.

Question: All newlyweds in Libya receive $60,000 Dinar (US$ 50,000 ) by the government to buy their first apartment so to help start up the family.
This is a well known rumour and a common joke in Libya. Whilst it may have been passed as official legislation, I know of not a single family who has been given this grant. The backbreaking bureaucracy associated with such grants and loans make them more or less impossible to obtain.

Question: Education and medical treatments are free in Libya. Before Gaddafi only 25% of Libyans are literate. Today the figure is 83%.

Education and Health Care – Free does not mean adequate. It is well known that Libya’s standard of health care is nothing short of appalling. It is widely known that the majority of Libyans seeking medical care leave for neighbouring countries for treatment. Our Education system is no better. It is outdated, teachers are underpaid and under-trained and libraries are largely non-existent. The syllabus was constantly being revised and reviewed under direct instruction from the former regime e.g. banning English, changing Quranic verses, etc. It is commonly said that Libyans would be happy to forfeit their ‘free health care’ and pay for a National Health Service if it was up to the required standard.

Question: Should Libyans want to take up farming career, they would receive farming land, a farming house, equipments, seeds and Livestock to kick- start their farms all for free.

This has never happened, in addition to this many farms and homes have been confiscated by the government to build railroads, The Great Man Made River and civil roads. The owners of the land were only compensated if there was a covered structure on the land as the Gaddafi regime legally owned any land and the people were only allowed to build on it. When there was compensation offered it was nowhere near the actual value of the property and many waited years to receive anything if at all. This system was also rife with corruption many residents told they had to pay a bribe to receive what little they were given.

Question: If Libyans cannot find the education or medical facilities they need in Libya, the government funds them to go abroad for it not only free but they get $2, 300/month accommodation and car allowance.

Categorically untrue. If this was the case, the former regime would have been in receipt of 6 million application forms – one for every man, women and child who ‘cannot find education or medical facilities they need’. This grant does not exist for the mainstream public. There is anectdotal evidence of some medical grants being given but again, the system was corrupt and opaque.

Question: In Libyan, if a Libyan buys a car, the government pays 50% of the price. The price of petrol in Libya is $0.14 per liter.

There is no truth to the former Gaddafi regime paying 50% of the value of a new car. Whilst the price of fuel is indeed cheap, the quality of roads, the accuracy and availability of road signs, the presence of road traffic police, and all other transport infrastructure is of abysmal standard. The absence of an integrated and functional public transport system means that people are reliant on their cars for all movement and might end up paying more on fuel than our neighbours around the Mediterranean basin.

Question: Libya has no external debt and its reserves amount to $150 billion now frozen globally.

Whilst our sovereign wealth is undeniable, none of it was spent on the people of Libya nor the infrastructure of the country. Basic amenities, services, and state infrastructure are either absent or of appalling standard. The availability of money is not tantamount to wealth or prosperity. The Arabs have a saying about Libya – “A rich nation of poor inhabitants.”

Question: If a Libyan is unable to get employment after graduation the state would pay the average salary of the profession as if he or she is employed until employment is found.

Categorically untrue. Even basic wages are sometimes unpaid for months, for those lucky enough to be employed. Welfare for the unemployed is non-existent.

Question: A portion of Libyan oil sale is credited directly to the bank accounts of all Libyan citizens.

No basis to this claim as no such case can be found.

Question: A mother who gave birth to a child receive US $5 ,000

Categorically untrue. There is a Child Benefit welfare payment in Libya – it is roughly 15-20 Libyan Dinars a month per child. No Libyan citizen was given foreign currency as compensation.

Question: 40 loaves of bread in Libya costs $ 0.15

Bread was subsidized by the state. Whilst the price varies (marginally) from shop to shop, bread usually costs ¼ dinars for 10 baguettes (small) or roughly 500grams per dinar.

Question: 25% of Libyans have a university degree

The absence of a comprehensive selection process and a corrupt entry protocol means that universities in Libya are grossly over populated and over subscribed, despite limited facilities. This results in an over inflated number of graduates, but not necessarily an adequate level of employability. There are thousands of students studying foundation year medicine in Tripoli alone.

Question: Gaddafi carried out the world¹s largest irrigation project, known as the Great Man-Made River project, to make water readily available.

The Jury is still out on this. The project has indeed supplied water to many towns and cities around Libya, but the cost is thought to be as stratastrophic as the time it took to complete this.
